Leveling the nail plate with base: technique, apex and typical mistakes
Leveling with a base is a controlled distribution of material that smooths out irregularities and forms a structure appropriate for the nail length. A quality result is not determined by maximum thickness. What matters is a compatible base, a clean contour without skin contact, correct material placement, and complete polymerization according to the manufacturer's instructions.
What does “level the nail” mean
The natural nail plate may have grooves, slight asymmetry, or a flat profile. Leveling helps create a smooth surface for color and distribute the material so that the coating does not look either flat or overly thick.
At the same time, leveling should not:
- mask an injured, painful, or suspiciously altered plate;
- turn any base into a material for long extensions;
- create a thick bead near the cuticle or sidewalls;
- compensate for improper preparation or an incompatible lamp;
- be performed the same way on short and long nails.
First choose the material, not the technique from a video
The behavior of the base is influenced by at least four characteristics.

A thinner base self-levels faster but flows more easily. A thicker base holds its drop longer and gives more time for apex shaping. However, a thick material is not necessarily hard, and a rubber base cannot automatically be considered the best for any thin nails.

Step-by-step logic of leveling
1. Assess the plate and desired length
Look at the nail from above, from the side, and from the free edge. Note where the dips are, whether the sides are parallel, and where the stress zone falls. If the length exceeds the base's capabilities, a different material or shorter shape is needed.
2. Prepare the nail without overfiling
Remove the previous coating in a controlled manner, shape the free edge, and remove only what interferes with adhesion from the plate. Live skin is not “excess cuticle.” Use primer, dehydrator, or additional bonder only when required by the system.
3. Apply a thin contact layer if the system requires it
A contact, or slip layer, helps the next drop move across the surface. It should be thin and controlled. Do not cure it separately if the manufacturer describes a “wet on wet” technique, and vice versa—do not leave it wet if the instructions require prior curing.
4. Add the construction drop
Place the material in the area where the most support is needed, and with light movements guide it to the sides and free edge. The brush directs the material but does not “scratch” grooves. Leave a clean micro-gap near the skin.
5. Use gravity but control the contour
A brief turning of the finger can help gather material in the center. This is not an automatic step for every base: a very thin product may shift quickly, while a thick one may barely change shape. After turning, check the sidewalls and free edge again.
6. Check the reflection and profile
An even light reflection helps see waves but does not show the entire architecture. Also assess:
- a smooth transition near the cuticle;
- no flooding in the sidewalls;
- sufficient but not excessive support of the stress zone;
- a thin and sealed free edge;
- symmetry left and right.
7. Cure according to the specific system instructions
Do not shorten the time just because the surface is already hard. Do not increase the layer to “level in one go” if the manufacturer does not allow it. For heavily pigmented bases, the recommended lamp and allowable thickness are especially important.

Is a pronounced apex always necessary
On a very short nail, sufficient structure may be almost imperceptible. As length increases, the lever arm changes, so support of the stress zone becomes more important. The goal is not to draw the same “hill” on ten nails, but to create a smooth profile appropriate for each plate.
