Why does the base or gel peel off: map of causes by lifting zone
Lifting is not a separate diagnosis or proof of “bad nails.” The location, time, and shape of lifting indicate where to look for the cause: in preparation, flooding, thickness, architecture, polymerization, system compatibility, or mechanical load. Start not with an extra primer, but with a defect map and the last change in the process.
First, record where the material lifted
Before removal, take photos from above, from the side, and from the free edge. Write down which finger had the problem and after how many days. One defect after a hit and systematic lifting on most nails are different scenarios.

Lifting near the cuticle
Three problems are most common here.
Cuticle residue on the plate
Cuticle is a thin layer of non-living cells attached to the nail plate. If material is applied over it, the coating adheres not to the plate itself. At the same time, aggressive cutting of the proximal nail fold does not improve adhesion and injures live tissue.
Flooding onto the skin
Even a thin thread of product near the fold creates an edge that lifts quickly. Unpolymerized gel on the skin also increases unwanted contact with acrylates. Before the lamp, clean the contour with an appropriate tool without smearing material onto the skin.
Thick step
If the base or gel lies like a bead near the cuticle, the edge receives additional load during growth. A smooth transition is formed during application, not by aggressive filing of the natural plate after curing.
Lifting on the free edge
When the edge chips or detaches, check not only “sealing.”
- Does the material match the length and flexibility of the nail?
- Is the support zone correctly positioned?
- Is the material too thin at the stress point?
- Is there a lever due to excessive length?
- Does the client use nails as a tool?
- Does the manufacturer allow filing of the free edge after application?
Too hard a material on a very flexible plate can lose adhesion during repeated bending. Too soft a material on a long nail may not maintain architecture. That is why choosing a base should consider not just density.
Lifting as a whole film
If the coating detaches in a large fragment, possible causes:
- incomplete polymerization of the base or subsequent layer;
- lamp not confirmed for this system;
- too thick material;
- residues of dust, oil, moisture, or product that did not evaporate;
- base, color, and top from incompatible systems;
- incorrect primer/base/builder sequence;
- product not intended for direct application to natural nail.
A material that feels hard to the touch does not prove complete polymerization. If the problem recurs on different clients after changing a lamp or product, check the systemic cause rather than adding a stronger primer for everyone.
When is primer or dehydrator needed
Primer, ultrabond, and dehydrator have different functions. They should not be applied “just in case” in layers on top of each other.
- Dehydrator temporarily removes surface moisture and oils.
- Primer changes adhesion conditions according to its chemistry.
- Ultrabond is often an acid-free adhesion product, but the exact meaning is determined by the specific manufacturer.

Diagnosis without chaotic replacement of everything
- Record the zone, shape, and day of lifting appearance.
- Determine whether the problem is isolated or recurring in several clients.
- Recall the last change: lamp, base, primer, prep, thickness, technique, or length.
- Check the instructions of all layers and the recommended lamp.
- Inspect the lamp, brushes, work surface, and dust removal method.
- Change one parameter and test on a tip or training surface.
- Do not cover an air pocket with material: lifting must be removed.
What not to do
- Do not file the natural nail “until rough.”
- Do not fill lifting with glue, base, or top.
- Do not apply multiple primers without instructions.
- Do not arbitrarily increase lamp time instead of checking compatibility.
- Do not label any change in the plate as fungus or “oily nails.”
- Do not continue service on a painful, injured, or suspiciously altered area.
Don't search for the “strongest” base at random. Compare clear bases by purpose, hardness, removal method, and recommended system.
