Sticky layer of gel: why it appears and when to remove it

Sticky layer of gel: why it appears and when to remove it

The sticky, or dispersion, layer is often a normal surface feature of polymerized gel: oxygen inhibits the reaction at the very top level. Its presence does not prove that the entire material is under-cured, and its absence does not mean the cure is correct. Remove the dispersion only at the stage and with the product that the specific system requires.

Why the surface remains sticky

During polymerization, most of the material hardens, but the surface comes into contact with oxygen. In many formulas, this creates a thin sticky layer. The next compatible material can be applied directly onto it, if the manufacturer specifies this.

The term "dispersion" is convenient in practice, although it is more accurate to speak of an oxygen inhibition layer. Its thickness and stickiness differ between bases, colors, gels, and tops.

Sticky layer or incomplete polymerization

Sign
Normal surface layer
Reason to check cure

Surface
thin and evenly sticky
wrinkles, waves, soft spots

Shape
structure is stable
material shifts or indents

After cleanser
surface clean per IFU
significant pigment or mass remains on the wipe

This table does not replace the manufacturer's test. Do not touch unpolymerized product with bare skin: contact with reactive components should be minimized.

When the layer is left on

It is often not removed between compatible layers of base, color, builder, and top. But the general rule "never remove" is also incorrect. Some filing, design, or other product application techniques require a cleaned surface.

Check three things:

  1. Whether the products belong to a compatible system.

  2. Whether mechanical filing is required before the next layer.

  3. What is explicitly stated in the instructions for both products.

    When the dispersion is removed

    • from a finish top with a sticky layer after full polymerization;

    • before filing, so that dust does not mix with the sticky surface;

    • before certain designs, if the technology requires it;

    • before switching to a product whose instructions require a cleaned surface.

      Use a compatible cleanser and a clean lint-free wipe. One wipe for all nails can transfer material residues and reduce shine.

      What no-wipe top means

      A no-wipe, or top without a sticky layer, does not require cleaning after a correct cure. This is convenient for a quick finish, glitter, and certain designs. However, the designation no-wipe does not mean:

      • that the top is compatible with all bases and colors;

      • that it can be applied at any thickness;

      • that it polymerizes in any lamp;

      • that the surface will not become dirty from touch or incorrect mode.

        Why the top becomes dull after wiping

        Possible reasons:

        • the cleanser is not recommended for this top;

        • the wipe is already saturated with the dispersion layer;

        • the top has not cooled for the time specified by the manufacturer;

        • the exposure or lamp does not match the formula;

        • the top is applied unevenly or over a contaminated base.

          Do not add random waiting time as a universal recipe. Some systems allow immediate cleaning, others describe a pause after the lamp.

          Safe working sequence

          1. Do not allow contact of raw product with skin.

          2. Polymerize the exact material in a confirmed lamp and mode.

          3. Do not determine cure only by touch or stickiness.

          4. If the layer needs to be removed, use the recommended cleanser.

          5. Take a clean lint-free wipe and move without transferring residues onto already cleaned surfaces.

          6. After work, clean the work area according to the approved protocol.

            Frequently Asked Questions

            Чи потрібно знімати липкий шар з бази перед кольором?
            Зазвичай у сумісній системі — ні, але вирішальною є інструкція до бази й кольору. Після опилу поверхню потрібно підготувати за окремим протоколом.
            Чи можна замінити cleanser спиртом?
            Не автоматично. Склад і концентрація можуть впливати на блиск та поверхню. Використовуйте засіб, який дозволяє виробник топа.
            Якщо топ липкий, він недосушений?
            Не обов’язково: топ може бути формулою з дисперсійним шаром. Спочатку перевірте маркування, інструкцію, лампу й режим.
