Nail Drill Bits: Materials, Shapes, and Tasks Without Confusion

A drill bit is not chosen by the color of the cut or a popular shape alone. You need to simultaneously consider the material of the working part, geometry, abrasiveness, diameter, cutting direction, and the specific task. Even the correct bit can damage the nail due to excessive pressure, prolonged stopping at one point, or an inappropriate rotation mode.<\/p>

Three Parameters That Cannot Be Separated<\/h2>

Material<\/h3>
  • Diamond bits<\/strong> have an abrasive surface. They are often used for controlled work on callused skin and areas around the nail.<\/li>
  • Carbide bits<\/strong> cut material with blades. They are primarily intended for work on artificial coating, if the cut shape allows.<\/li>
  • Ceramic bits<\/strong> are also used for removing or correcting material. The feel during work differs from a metal bit, but this does not eliminate the need to control pressure and heat.<\/li> <\/ul>

    The material name does not determine the full purpose. For example, not every diamond bit is safe for any area, and not every ceramic bit is equally suitable for thin gel polish and hard gel.<\/p>

    Shape<\/h3>

    The shape determines which part of the tool the technician can work with and how easily contact can be controlled.<\/p>

    This is a guideline, not a universal protocol. The same shape name from different manufacturers may mean a different diameter, tip, and cut profile.<\/p>

    Abrasiveness and Cut<\/h3>

    Colored rings often indicate the degree of abrasiveness, but the specific value must be read in the manufacturer's catalog. Color does not replace the article number and technical description.<\/p>

    For carbide bits, the direction and geometry of the blades are also important. For a drill with reverse, check whether the bit is right-cut, left-cut, or bidirectional.<\/p>

    Why There Are No Universal RPMs<\/h2>

    A safe working mode depends on the bit, its diameter, material, device, area, direction of movement, and the technician's skill. One RPM number for all bits creates a false sense of safety.<\/p>

    Rely on the range from the bit and device manufacturer. During work, controlled signs are more important:<\/p>

    • the bit cuts the material, not slides with extra pressure;<\/li>
    • the hand moves without long stops at one point;<\/li>
    • the client does not feel burning, pain, or sharp vibration;<\/li>
    • the shank is fully and evenly secured;<\/li>
    • the bit has no wobble, corrosion, or damaged cut.<\/li> <\/ul>

      Pressure, Angle, and Trajectory<\/h2>

      Excessive pressure does not compensate for a dull or incorrectly chosen bit. It increases friction, heat, and the risk of losing control. Work with the allowed part of the bit, support your hand, and illuminate the area well.<\/p>

      After each pass, evaluate the result. If the material is not removing predictably, stop and check the rotation direction, fixation, cut, and tool condition.<\/p>

      Cleaning, Disinfection, and Sterilization<\/h2>

      A reusable bit goes through the full approved salon cycle according to the tool material and local requirements. Mechanical cleaning does not equal disinfection, and disinfection does not equal sterilization.<\/p>

      Disposable caps and abrasives are not reused. Before purchasing, check whether the bit withstands your approved processing method.<\/p>
