Pedicure discs: how to choose the base, diameter, and replacement file

Pedicure discs: how to choose the base, diameter, and replacement file

A pedicure disc is a reusable base for the machine and a disposable abrasive file. The diameter determines the area and access, grit determines the intensity of treatment, and technique controls pressure, movement, and skin condition. The disc should only be used on areas and in modes allowed by the manufacturer, without working on wounds, inflammation, or unknown growths.

What the system consists of

Base

A metal or other reusable base is fixed in the handpiece of the machine. It must be even, free of corrosion, deformation, and wobble. Before purchasing, check the compatibility of the shank with the machine and the approved method of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization.

Replacement file

A self-adhesive abrasive is attached to a dry, clean base without folds or shifting. After one client, the file is removed and disposed of. Re-gluing or processing a paper abrasive does not make it reusable.

How to choose the diameter

Size Strength What to control
Small local areas and more precise work do not linger the edge in one spot
Medium balance of access and area stable contact with the entire working zone
Large faster treatment of a wide plane access near curves and control of leverage

A larger disc is not automatically faster or better. On complex contours, its edge may contact unevenly.

How to choose grit

A coarser file removes pronounced callus faster, a finer one smooths the surface. Do not start with maximum removal. Assess the skin condition and choose the least sufficient intensity.

Grit markings should be compared within the same line: the abrasive material and backing affect the actual feel.

Work sequence

  1. Perform a visual assessment of the foot and determine the boundaries of the cosmetic procedure.
  2. Choose a dry, wet, or soakless protocol according to the system instructions.
  3. Check the base and securely attach a new file.
  4. Set the mode within the recommendations of the disc and machine manufacturer.
  5. Work with controlled passes without strong pressure or lingering.
  6. Regularly clear the field of view and check the temperature and client reaction.
  7. Switch to a finer abrasive only if final smoothing is needed.
  8. After the procedure, dispose of the file and run the base through the approved cycle.

A universal RPM number for all diameters, files, and techniques is incorrect. A larger diameter changes the linear speed of the edge even at the same rotations.

Signs of excessive treatment

  • the client feels burning or pain;
  • the skin becomes noticeably pink or shiny;
  • the master returns to the same spot many times;
  • pressure has to be increased to achieve results;
  • the abrasive is clogged or peeling off.

In these cases, stop. The goal of cosmetic pedicure is controlled smoothing, not removing the maximum possible amount of skin.

When not to use a disc

Do not treat open cracks, bleeding, inflammation, ulcers, unknown growths, or areas with altered sensitivity without proper professional assessment. A pedicure master does not diagnose or promise treatment.

For clients with conditions or states that may affect healing, circulation, or sensitivity, a protocol defined by a competent medical professional and local regulations is required.

Compare pedicure discs, reusable bases, and replacement files as a single compatible system.

Frequently Asked Questions
