Why top coat becomes dull, cracks, shrinks, or has bald spots

The fastest way to find a top coat defect is by the moment it appears. Bald spots or craters before the lamp often indicate contamination or poor wetting; wrinkles after cure point to thickness, lamp, or incompatibility; cracks during wear indicate different stiffness of layers or incorrect architecture. Dullness after wiping requires checking the cleanser, wipe, and top coat instructions.

One symptom can have multiple causes. Change one parameter at a time, otherwise you won’t understand what exactly fixed the problem.

Why top coat does not spread evenly

Dust after filing, oil, cream, finger touch, or residue of an incompatible liquid changes the surface wetting. The material gathers into drops and exposes areas of color.

Before applying top coat, prepare the surface exactly as the system requires. Do not add a random dehydrator between layers: it may not be intended for artificial material.

Thick and thin layer

Too thin top coat may shrink toward the center and not cover the free edge. Too thick top coat may run, overheat, or not fully polymerize. Viscosity does not determine the allowed thickness: a thick no-wipe top coat is also applied according to instructions.

If you need to level large unevenness, do it with a structural material before color or top coat. The finish should not replace the apex.

Why cracks appear

A hard glass-like top coat on a very flexible base may not follow its movement. The reverse combination also sometimes loses shape. Additional reasons:

• top coat or base applied outside the allowed thickness;
• length not supported by the stress zone;
• free edge filed after finishing;
• systems from different brands not tested together;
• material or lamp changed without re-testing.

How not to lose shine

For a top coat with a dispersion layer, use the recommended cleanser and a clean lint-free wipe. If the manufacturer specifies a pause after the lamp, observe it. Do not wipe a no-wipe top coat if the protocol does not require it.

Shine also depends on full cure. Arbitrarily increasing the time does not fix an incompatible spectrum or an overly thick layer.

Diagnosis in six steps

1. Record the exact base, color, top coat, lamp, and modes.
2. Determine whether the defect appeared before the lamp, after it, or during wear.
3. Check the cleanliness of the surface and brush.
4. Apply a control layer of recommended thickness on a nail tip.
5. Polymerize in a confirmed lamp without reducing time.
6. For wipe-top, clean per IFU with a new wipe.

If the control test is successful, compare the technique on the nail: shape, free edge, thickness, and hand position in the lamp.

When choosing a top coat, match it with the elasticity of the base, the desired finish, the cleaning method, and a compatible lamp.
