Why gel polish wrinkles in the lamp or does not dry

Wrinkled gel polish most often means that the top part of the layer has cured, while deeper areas have received insufficient energy for complete polymerization. The cause may be excessive thickness, high pigmentation, an incompatible or faulty lamp, incorrect hand position, or a foreign product in the system. Such a layer should not be masked with top coat—it must be safely removed and the cause found.

What the problem looks like

Signs of incomplete or uneven polymerization can vary:

  • the surface gathers in waves or “skin”;
  • a soft material is felt under a hard film;
  • the color shifts, bubbles, or indents;
  • the side areas cure worse than the center;
  • the coating quickly peels off as a whole film;
  • after removing the sticky layer, the wipe takes not only dispersion but also color.

Stickiness by itself is not always a problem: many gels form an oxygen-inhibited dispersion layer. But wrinkling, a soft mass, or a movable film is not a normal dispersion layer.

Cause 1. Layer too thick

Light must pass through the entire thickness of the material and activate the photoinitiator. If too much color is applied, the surface may cure quickly while the lower part remains insufficiently polymerized.

It is especially easy to overload the layer when the technician tries to achieve dense color in one application. A safer logic is several controlled layers within the manufacturer's instructions, rather than one thick one.

Cause 2. High pigmentation

Dark, white, neon, and some dense camouflage shades absorb or scatter more light. This does not mean all dark colors are “bad.” It means that thickness and the recommended lamp mode are especially important for them.

If one shade in a familiar system behaves differently, compare:

  • whether the product is well mixed, if allowed by the manufacturer;
  • whether the brush picks up an excessive amount;
  • whether the thickness is the same in the center and at the sides;
  • whether there is a special note for this color in the instructions.

Cause 3. The lamp does not match the system

The mark 48 W does not describe the spectrum, diode arrangement, actual intensity at the nail surface, or compatibility with the specific gel's photoinitiator. Two lamps with the same claimed power can polymerize the same product differently.

The most reliable option is a lamp that the system manufacturer has directly tested and specified in the protocol. Without such information, the technician is essentially working without a confirmed combination.

When browsing manicure lamps, compare not only watts but also compatibility with your materials, the geometry of the inner chamber, LED placement, and the gel manufacturer's recommendations.

Cause 4. Hand positioned incorrectly

Even a compatible lamp will not help if light does not reach the entire surface. Problematic situations:

  • thumb tilted to the side;
  • fingers bent or overlapping each other;
  • long nails touching the bottom and changing the angle;
  • hand not inserted all the way;
  • client moves fingers during the cycle.

The thumb is often best cured separately if the working protocol allows it. The main thing is to keep the nail in an area of uniform illumination.

Cause 5. Contamination or incompatible layers

Oil, dust, lint, excess cleaner, a foreign primer, or a base from another system can change adhesion and the behavior of the next layer. Not every defect is a lamp problem.

If the issue appeared after changing one product, go back to the last confirmed combination and check changes one at a time. Do not test questionable compatibility directly on a client.

Cause 6. Lamp dirty or worn out

A layer of dust and gel on the diodes or reflective surface reduces efficiency. Some diodes may work unevenly, and the timer may finish the cycle early. The lamp must be cleaned in a way allowed by the manufacturer and inspected regularly.

What to do if the layer has already wrinkled

  1. Do not cover the defect with the next color or top.
  2. Do not touch the soft material with bare hands.
  3. Remove the problematic layer in a way compatible with the material underneath.
  4. Clean the surface without smearing unpolymerized product on the skin.
  5. Check thickness, shade, lamp, hand position, and system sequence.
  6. Reapply thinly and according to the official protocol.
