Abrasiveness of nail files: how to read grit and not over-file
Grit is a guideline for the coarseness of the abrasive: the lower the number, the larger the particles and the more aggressive the material removal; the higher the number, the finer the surface. But 180 grit on different files may feel different due to the grain material, backing, freshness, and pressure. For the natural plate, only the permitted fine abrasiveness and minimal number of strokes should be used.

This is not permission to use each value on the natural nail. The intended use must be verified with the file and system manufacturer.
Why one number does not give a complete answer
- Abrasive material: particles have different shapes and wear resistance.
- Backing: a rigid file holds the plane, a flexible one follows the curve.
- Shape: straight, half-moon, and boat shapes provide different access to areas.
- Condition: a new file removes more actively, a worn one provokes stronger pressure.
- Movement: long repeated passes can over-file even with fine grit.
File by task
For shortening the length of an artificial nail, rigidity and sufficient abrasiveness are needed. For leveling the surface, control of the plane is required. For the natural free edge, a finer tool and minimal pressure are used.
Do not use a coarse file to remove shine from the natural plate. Prep should not create deep scratches “for adhesion.”
File or buffer
A buffer has a softer backing and better follows the surface, but it is not safe by default. Prolonged polishing of one area thins the nail. A file with a rigid backing shapes side lines more precisely, but its angle requires control.
How to work without unnecessary passes
- Determine the material and final shape.
- Choose the finest abrasiveness that effectively performs the task.
- If needed, round the sharp edges of a new file with a separate tool.
- Stabilize the finger and see the contact area.
- Count not the strokes, but the result after each pass.
- Change grit sequentially, not trying to achieve a finish with a coarse file.
Hygiene
Porous files and buffers are usually intended for single use or for one client according to local regulations and labeling. Paper abrasive that cannot be fully processed by an approved method is not used on another person.
Metal bases with replaceable files are processed per protocol, and single-use abrasive is disposed of after the client.
